I am an all time fan of Spongebob and have enjoyed many laughs with it. But this is a mockery of the very name Spongebob! The jokes are poorly written and inspire only minimal laughter. Spongebob has turned from an all around nice guy to an horrible punk! Every time I hear him talk I want to mask my ears and weep. I’ll admit there is some humorous but only if you get pointless and ridiculous jokes humorous. Honestly I weak to have high expectations for Spongebob but since “Where’s Gary” I’ve lost hope altogether in Spongebob. If you want Spongebob I highly recommend seasons 1, 2, and 3 that’s where the staunch laughs are.

While living and relating to this community of would-be-celebrities Michael slowly begins to ogle the folly of it all and contemplates leaving the capable confines of the commune and face the harsh world outside without the guise and pretense of being someone else. The query is whether he is strong enough to keep aside his celebrity persona and enter the mainstream unknown and alone.

There is also an intermittent secondary storyline concerning a Catholic Priest and a group of Nuns working in a remote status of Latin America. During a flight in a minute plane piloted by the Priest one of the Sisters falls out the start cargo door and somehow survives without injury. She believes God has performed a miracle and convinces the other Sisters to test their faith by jumping out of the plane without a parachute, telling them if they truly contain “God will be your parachute”. This aspect of the movie initially seems out of region with the main storyline but upon further examination the thoughtful viewer will arrive to observe that it’s examining the same existential angst which accompanies feelings of alienation and disconnectedness as the necessary storyline. The only disagreement is here the subplot is dealing with the broken spiritual relationship between God and man instead of man and society.

Critique: The beginning and kill are exceptional, the first share successfully drawing the audience into the films highly unorthodox landscape, the last share providing the viewer not so grand with a definite nick conclusion but positing a number of existential musings that will pause with you long after viewing. The soundtrack is incredible, especially the music of Silver Mount Zion which accompanies the skydiving Nuns sequence. Be forewarned, the movie is excessively insensible and the sage is told through images, dialogue and music. If you’re looking for action and adventure pass on this one. However if you’re someone who enjoys something thoughtful and provocative, you know something you can discuss and decipher over a cup of coffee, this is your film.

My Rating: -3 1/2 Stars-.

Our scene opens with the crooning of Mister Lonely, the classic 1960’s tune by Bobby Vinton whilst our young Michael Jackson impersonator glides slowly across the blue sky on a bike with a dangling plush monkey, darting about tedious him. Trying to form a living as Michael Jackson(Diego Luna) on the streets of Paris seems to be uneasy, and we search for our Michael frustrated although he’s quite a ringer. A job booked for him at a senior citizens home gives him some enjoyment as he tells them not to die, and dances his diagram into meeting a unique acquaintance, Marilyn Monroe(Samantha Morton) .

Now that he’s met Marilyn, there has been unusual life breathed into him, as she invites him to live along with her and around twenty other impersonators like themselves, in a blooming castle far from the rest of the world. Though hesitant to leave the comfortability of his room with all the things that have served him well, Michael agrees to depart to the commune.

Michael arrives to a warm welcome by his fellow celebrities Charlie Chaplin, Abraham Lincoln, Madonna, James Dean, Sammy Davis Jr., The Pope, The Queen of England, Diminutive Red Riding Hood, the Three Stooges and Buckwheat, although many of them wonder ‘why is he here? ‘

Mister Lonely is surreal, and graceful with a soundtrack including exquisite ‘13 angels standing guard ’round the side of your bed’ by A Silver Mt. Zion, and the ethnic ‘Mulima Hale’ by Salome Nolega & Girls. With images that will re-enter your head for days and weeks after viewing, and a shining subplot to reconsider upon.

While watching this film, especially scenes toward the middle provocative tense and off-the-wall scenes from the commune I found myself downhearted and my attention waning, but in retrospect that is exactly the blueprint it should be. The mood is captured so well, and the personalities and flaws of these celebrities was dealt with a substantial deal of view, respect and creativity.

A film that is aloof captivating me days later, if you’re willing to sit through something a runt different, that may result in you asking yourself some of the same questions.

“Who am I? Am I willing to let others search for who I really am? Is there a God? What am I doing here? “

Executive Suite is an often overlooked drama, but I beleive it to be one of the best films of the 1950’s. The death of the president of a gigantic furniture company creates a power struggle among the remaining board members. Competing for the top job are William Holden as an idealistic designer and engineer, and Fredric March as the company’s chief acccountant. These two use powerful of the film jockying other members of the board for their votes. The climactic showdown comes in the fabricate of a board meeting where one man snatches victory from the jaws of defeat, not by force or cunning or even any kind of cleverness, but simply by telling the truth. One of the finest scenes you’ll ever gawk in any film.

Holden and March are both outstanding, with straightforward direction by Robert Wise. One enthralling note: this film has no musical bag, very rare for a film from the 50’s–only the bell from the company’s clock tower.

This is a film that should be seen by anyone involved in account structure or conflict resolution. Definitely a film whose time has near again.

The first reason you need to glimpse this film is for William Holden. I form it a point of trying to scrutinize every film he’s in. He is my common actor of all time. Now that thats out of the design…Robert Wise has delivered a suspenseful and tremendously well made film that doesn’t employ a lick of music and has resplendent camera work. I was particularly blown away by all the mild dolly shots and the opening POV sequence in the beginning of the film…Seeing everything through Bullard’s eyes, the stupid man who sets this yarn off and running. It reminded me a large deal of the John Frankenheimer film “Seconds” in that sequence and Suite was made sometime before that film. This is a must study office drama that really was ahead of its time from a technical filmmaking perspective. The script is solid and watching Holden fight to be the President of the company is a joy to gawk! And you’ve gotta adore a movie that has Stanwyck and Holden together again in the same film.

This features my approved Marvel Team Up ever! Whenever Stan Lee and Co. mature to place together Spider-Man with Daredevil in the comics, it was always moving and captivating. Even the awful stories were unruffled generous with these two! This arresting version is no exception as these two team up after a brief misunderstanding to remove on the Kingpin (a major DD foe as well as Spider-Man) and his goons!

The extra episode with FF and Daredevil was also captivating. A minute lighter DD in that one but no less intrigiging. A profitable addition to the other Spider-Man DVD’s out there!

By the map, I agree with the previous reviewer. It should’ve been called Spider-Man: Enter Daredevil.

It’s hard for me to engage out a celebrated, from all the engrossing Spidey TV shows. Basically, I’ve always impartial been too busy being thankful that the wallcrawler’s on the minute mask, in the first site. This dvd here, DAREDEVIL VS. SPIDER-MAN, is from the terrific 1990s Spider-Man cartoon. And while I’ve been in the new habit of slamming dvd releases containing paltry sums of episodes, I’m fair happy these suckers are made available at all in dvd. Because who the eff knows when we’ll fetch rotund season releases on this series? Me, I’m hunkering down for a looong wait.

Spidey is an icon, and his fans won’t suffer too many years elapsing without his being on TV or, nowadays, in a feature film. This particular cartoon incarnation ran from 1994 to 1998 for 65 episodes, and, even at its final stages, it was mild well received enough to garner its contain sequel series in 1999, the very short lived (and rank) SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED, which placed Spidey on Counterearth.

Back to the 1994 series: Most of the classic Spider-Man elements are here. From his everyday sadsack life to his familiar supporting cast, from his rogues’ gallery (excepting Sandman) to his sense of humor and awful guy baiting. And in this one, Peter is collected attending college at Empire Spot U, even as he continues to shoot photos for the Daily Bugle.

The four episodes in DAREDEVIL VS. SPIDER-MAN are pulled from Season 3’s “Sins of the Fathers” yarn arc (Chapters VI – IX) . Daredevil, by the blueprint, appears in only the first two of these episodes (”Framed” and “The Man Without Alarm”) . When Peter Parker is hired by the Kingpin and then framed and arrested for a federal crime, blind attorney Matt Murdock’s services are mysteriously engaged in Peter’s defense. But when his civilian identity proves inadequate, Murdock dons the more action-friendly guise of Daredevil. Then comes the inevitable misunderstanding and skirmish between superheroes, followed by the teaming up, and ends with Parker exonerated and the Kingpin walking away unscathed.

One quibble I have is that I don’t win the actor voicing Matt Murdock/Daredevil. For whatever reason, I impartial don’t deem Daredevil’s relate is that deep.

The third episode, “The Ultimate Slayer,” revolves around Alistair Smythe and his unwilling transformation into a half-cyborg Spider Slayer, thanks to the Kingpin. Blaming Norman Osbourne for his father’s death, Smythe targets him for revenge. Meanwhile, Peter learns that Harry and Mary Jane are engaged.

In “Tombstone,” with the Daily Bugle about to publish an exhibit on Alicia Silvermane and her crime syndicate, the supertough, superstrong albino Tombstone is hired to assign pressure on Bugle editor Robbie Robertson. And, surprisingly, these two section a past.

And, throughout all this, the mystical Madame Web occasionally steps in with some obscure, befuddling advice for Spidey, no doubt her blueprint of prepping him for the cosmic events in the final season.

Compared to today’s standards, the animation here is more clumsy, not to mention that the occasional expend of CG in cityscape sequences tends to clash with the 2D stuff. Also, the wallcrawler is at times depicted as too plump a figure. However, the quality of the storytelling and the nice continuity produce up for whatever the visuals may lack. Because of the restrictions placed on the series by the Fox network, it’s unruffled an action packed series, but not as dynamic as it could’ve been. One of the funnier, more offbeat restrictions prevents Spidey from harming pigeons whenever he landed on a roof. Also, FOX had prohibited the inclusion of pleasant firearms, so the unpleasant guys and even the law enforcers made do with laser guns. It’s a bit jarring, and initially had me thinking that this Spidey was status in the reach future.

For what it is, this dvd actually comes thru with decent special features: optional Stan Lee intros to each of the featured four episodes; a bonus episode (”King Pinned”) from the 1966 Spidey cartoon; another bonus episode (”And a Blind Man Shall Lead Them”), from the 1990s Incredible Four cartoon guest-starring Daredevil, in which the FF lose their natty powers; and Stan Lee’s Soapbox, as Stan reflects long and nostalgically about Daredevil (around 18 minutes) .

Some trivia for fans of the show: Starting with the second year, the episodes in each season began to be linked in a single, season-long, over-arcing storyline. So, for example, the individual episode titles of Season 2 all fell under the “Neogenic Nightmare” banner. Season 3, under “The Sins of the Fathers” banner. Season 4, under “Partners in Pain.” And Season 5, “Forgotten Warriors.” I understand that the network heads were utterly ticked off at head writer John Semper, whose notion it was to insert long-running storylines.

Most of the dvds available about this series seem to focus on Season 3, which is the “Sins of the Fathers” chronicle arc. Chapters II-V of it are smooth in Spider-Man – The Ultimate Villain Showdown (Captivating Series) . Chapters X & XI are in Spider-Man – The Venom Saga (Consuming Series) (along with Season 1’s 3-part “The Alien Costume” record) . Chapters XII-XIV are found in Spider-Man – The Return of the Green Goblin (Bewitching Series) (with the first chapter of Season 4’s “Partners in Wretchedness” arc) . The only episode missing is section one of “Sins of the Fathers” (the one with Dr. Unfamiliar) and one can only wonder why it’s not included.

Personally, I’m waiting on the dvd release of the last season, which features the “Six Forgotten Warriors” saga, the 3-part “Secret Wars” (based on the Secret Wars humorous book maxi-series) and the 2-part series finale “Spider-Wars,” as, in another reality, Peter and five other Spideys must go up against Spider-Carnage.

It’s gonna be a long wait, it looks like.

Inglorious Bastards is a campy cult war flick, high on violence and insanity but a cramped improper on current sense. You’ve got a bunch of reject U.S. soldiers facing court martial for various infractions, like flying the jetplane to visit their girlfriend a few thousand miles away.

On the map to the military prison the convoy gets hit by some German artillery. This enables a few of the prisoners to race. This ragtag group decides to head for neutral Switzerland while avoiding the American armies plus the Nazis.

Now along the diagram there is all sorts of unrestrained madness. The highlight has got to be when they stumble across the female German soldiers skinny dippin in the lake. Allright! Unprejudiced what you question to seek when running for your life through Europe. The soldiers masquerade as Nazis and pick up ready for some wet-n-wild fun.

Inglorious Bastards is an intriguing thrill trot that makes war seem like a party. The acting is decent. I recognized the cigar-smokin’ Fred Williamson from Rodriquez’s classic From Dusk til Dawn.

I’m anxious to peer QT’s remake, supposedly due out in 2010. Somehow I doubt it resembles this film too distinguished. But PLEEEEASE Quentin, retain the naked nazi chicks with the machine guns. I’m begging you!

I watched this classic on HBO as a child and loved it. I recently bought it and watched it the first day I received it. It is the best “B” class WW II movie out there. The acting is shapely agreeable and the yarn, while implausible, is heavenly wintry. All of the actors were perfect for their role. Other than Bo Svenson, Fred Williamson, and Ian Bannen, I have not seen any of the other actors since. It’s too abominable. I would like to recognize them in something else. By the device, if any of you out there who were in the service is wondering why Bo Svenson sounds authentic calling cadence in the movie, it is because he was in the Marines for six years.The movie is relatively short by today’s standards so halt it if you go to the bathroom. Anyway, a gargantuan and fun movie. I loved it as a kid and do today.

I’m always reluctant to review properties like School Rumble mainly because anime comedy really isn’t my bag. Chalk it up to my natural tendency to be poor, but it really takes some spectacular exciting misfortune to procure me to laugh. As such my scores are usually lower than the fan boys (and girls) would like. However, don’t let my crabbiness collect you down. If you happen to be pleased the School Rumble franchise, the 2nd Semester will surely delight. But before we come by ahead of ourselves here, let’s choose a glimpse at the icy hard facts, shall we?

Funimation has recently decided to re-release the Place 1 sets of the demonstrate to the North American market. This, the 2nd Semester state coming in at a total runtime of 610 minutes, spans 4 discs and comes packaged as a pair of thin packs within a cardboard slipcase. All 26 episodes are contained in this, the Complete Collection.

The demonstrate wears a fairly conservative TV MA rating (oddly enough, up from the TV PG rating it had in the last release), which more than compensates for the over-the-top (clothed) fan service, and slapstick.

Language options are typical sub & dub meaning the option of unique Japanese dialog track or an English dub (either in stereo) and English subtitles available under either language choice.

Extras include an interview with the show’s creator, interview with the Japanese grunt actress who played Tenma, textless songs and a host of Funimation trailers.

Boy it’s tough to accurately exhibit the sage here. I guess the best design to characterize it for someone who has no prior experience with the explain is to imagine a blend of comedy and drama, state in the high school scenario, with a few teenage kids making up the main cast. More specifically, summer, tumble, and winter pass by as Tsukamoto Tenma continues to try and regain the heart of her potential boy-toy Karasuma Ooji. Harima Kenji meanwhile tries to confess his absorb worship for Tenma who, as we impartial established, has eyes only for Ooji. The humor, which actually comes in many shapes and sizes here (from all out spoof sequences to worthy outmoded fashioned slap stick) serves as the motivator while established characters such as Harima, Eri and Hanai support things moving in the Cultural Festival episodes. The pacing here is speedy and mad and the prove maintains a very energetic rhythm despite the fact that nothing distinguished is ever really happening.

The teach tracks on this one advance with the usual hesitancy associated with determining which is respectable. The English dub holds up really well with most of the jokes retained and equally charming but I dismay the nod actually goes to the Japanese dialog track here for its bubbly emotion and slightly more effortless delivery.

The in-show soundtrack, like the fist season of the prove, remains poppy, upbeat with objective enough goofy charm to integrate with the vivid visuals flawlessly.

In all it’s difficult to argue with the fact that this prove is a whole lot of fun as indicated by the first paragraph of the summary on the benefit of the box: We unexcited have no view what’s really going on with this point to, beyond the fact that the weirdness is really piling up.

Fans of the first season will likely become a bit frustrated with the fact that the cherish triangle with Harima goes on quite unresolved here as well. In fact almost nothing in the blueprint of character tale threads gets resolved until the final two episodes.

School Rumble 2nd Semester is a lot like the first season in that it’s a gorgeous toothsome anime property with a few rough spots scattered about (sure filler, overacted drama, Tenma’s aggravating antics, etc.) but at the raze of the day, it comes together well. So maybe I’m peaceful a bit too grumpy to fully clinch the School Rumble near, I can confess that there are definitely laughs to be had here.

A very beneficial overview of one of the most intriquing moments in world history. Worthy dramatic finish, voice-overs, etc. Ample blend of entertainment, history, and analysis. Includes the diaries of numerous persons: Hitler’s pilot, Hitler himself, Jews, Germans, Soldiers and Eva Braun (Hitler’s mistress) . Lots of involving color footage.

Adolf Hitler and the people of the Third Reich are seen here as we’ve never seen them before — not only in color, but laughing, clowning, having a well-behaved time.

Well, the German people were, anyway. Hitler always seemed to be too aware of his dwelling as the stern, implacable warlord to loosen up whenever he even suspected a camera was focused on him. To view Der Fuehrer smile, laugh or appear even moderately light-hearted, you have to view for the moment when he happens to be looking partially away from the camera, to have momentarily forgotten its presence. There is one scene where he chats briefly with a group of German children, giving one resplendent runt blonde girl a hug. But it’s shot from a short distance and his face is partially hidden. I’ve seen collected photos, candid ones, of Adolf Hitler interacting with children, who seem to be relaxed and jubilant in his presence. Study at those photos, and read reminiscences of people who were stop to Hitler, and you’ll collect out, probably to your amazement, that yes, the “most scandalous man in history” was fond of children.

“Hitler In Colour” does give us a great more “human” witness at the German people of the Third Reich era, showing them at work and play (although footage of smiling children giving the Nazi salute are admittedly unsettling.) Normal human interactions and the underlying unsuitable of the Nazi era often were overlaid, one on the other.

This DVD is very illuminating for those who have until now only seen fading dismal and white movies of the Hitler era. It is an experience not to be missed.

AN AMERICAN CRIME is a problematic small reenactment of a proper criminal case of child abuse dating befriend to 1965. The record is horrifying and while the film places the facts in our faces, the impact of the film is out of focus. This is due to the script that elects to glaze over the motivational aspects of a brutal crime in favor of attempting to investigate fully the mindset of both the perpetrator and the victims. Were it not for some well-behaved performances by Catherine Keener and Ellen Page this film might be easily dismissed: the strength of these actresses to overcome a feeble script and manage to involve us is distinguished to their credit as artists.

Indiana, 1965, and Gertrude Baniszewski (Catherine Keener) is a ‘borderline’ single mother of several children who is asked to hold care of Sylvia (Ellen Page) and Jennie Likens (Hayley McFarland) while the girls parents remain on the road as carnies, promising to send checks to relieve serve their farmed out children. Gertrude is a woman of loose morals who adds babies to her sizable family during liaisons with young men like the itinerant Dennis (James Franco) . Gertrude takes in laundry to assist her household and requires her young children to work toward the same goal. A friction develops between Sylvia and Jenny and the children by Gertrude’s illicit adventures as well as covert sexual similarities surfacing in her children and at ‘family meetings’ Gertrude doles out punishment for Sylvia – punishment including cigarette burns, coke bottle insertions, branding etc. – all of which are undeserved and eventually lead to Sylvia’s imprisonment in the basement where Gertrude and her children and their friends daily torture Sylvia. Eventually Sylvia dies and Gertrude and family are brought to court for charges of first-degree destroy and variations thereof. The court proceedings (under the leadership of lawyer Leroy K. Original played by Bradley Whitford) provide the chronicle drivers as each allegation is then acted out by flashbacks until the verdicts are reached.

Catherine Keener is salubrious as the deranged, maladaptive Gertrude and Ellen Page adds yet another feather to her cap in a role that in another actor’s hands could have been over the top. Writer/director Tommy O’Haver (the script was written with the support of Irene Turner) does manage to present us the facts of this atrocity yet fails to go inside the characters to give us the psychobiographies this film has the potential for illuminating. It may well repel some viewers, but it does bring to the forefront a crime that is all too popular in this country. Grady Harp, May 08

In the summer of 1965, two young girls, Sylvia Likens, age 16 and her slight sister Jennie, crippled with polio, were left by their itinerant parents in the care of Gertrude Baniszewski, a divorced mother of seven, in a blue-collar neighborhood in Indiana, who agreed to care for them for $20 a week while their parents traveled the carnival circuit. Three months later, Sylvia was dumb, and Gertrude Baniszewski was standing trial for first-degree cancel, accused of having engineered Sylvia’s death by torture.

The film, “An American Crime”, shown on the Showtime cable channel, follows Sylvia’s last three months fairly closely. Gertrude Baniszewski, who may or may not have been playing with a rotund deck to inaugurate with, progressed from slaps and spankings when the benefit checks arrived slow, to more grotesque punishments after Sylvia “lied” about Baniszewski’s oldest daughter Paula being pregnant (Paula actually was pregnant by a married man), culminating in Sylvia being locked in the basement and systematically tortured not only by Gertrude Baniszewksi and six of her seven children (the baby was too young to participate), but also by several neighborhood children who stopped by from time to time after school to join in the fun. Even worse, Gertrude forced Jennie Likens to occupy share in abusing her sister, threatening to do the same thing to her if she didn’t. By the time Sylvia mercifully died of shock and abuse, there was hardly a square plod on her body that had not been lop, scalded, beaten, burned with cigarettes, or subjected to whatever torments the Baniszewskis could dream up, including scratching the words onto her abdomen with red-hot needles in letters two inches high “I’M A PROSTITUTE AND PROUD OF IT”. The movie notes that although Gertrude Baniszewski started this particular act, she was too squeamish to accomplish it, so she got one of the neighborhood boys, Ricky Hobbs, to do it for her.

The film tells the tale in a straightforward manner without any attempt to befriend us understand why these horrific events took region, and the director has reach under some criticism for this. Perhaps there was no attempt to account for why Sylvia had to go through such hell during the last three tormented months of her life because there is no explanation. One can sympathize with Gertrude Baniszewski up to a point; she was abandoned by her husband to bring seven children up alone with no child support; she was pregnant thirteen times resulting in seven children and six stillbirths or miscarriages; and her boyfriend was abusive to her; but millions of other women have gone through considerable worse than Gertrude Baniszewski has, and none, to my knowledge, has systematically tortured another human being to death. Was her circumstances to blame for her actions? I don’t judge so. Was her mental area to blame? Or was the awful hand she was dealt by life responsible? Again, how do you account for that millions of people have had it great worse than Gertrude Baniszewski without resorting to the level of unfriendly savagery with which she treated Sylvia Likens? Did she objective watch in Sylvia something she had hated all her life and was obvious to slay? We don’t know, and wisely, the director doesn’t do this as a reason for Baniszewski’s actions. The film also raises the inquire, which was never answered in the accurate case, of why the neighborhood children turned into willing, even interested, participants. What kind of enviromnent spawns children like this?

The acting in the film is uniformly marvelous across the board, with Ellen Page turning in a sensitive and well-nuanced performance as Sylvia and Catherine Keener giving a chilling portrayal of Gertrude Baniszewski. I didn’t feel the movie was being made for its shock value, although what happened to Sylvia was gruesome enough, nor do I fault the director for not indulging in specious “explanations” for the inexplicable. The film does raise a distinguished larger question: was Gertrude Baniszewski mentally ill or was she impartial humdrum unfavorable? Is wrong a compose of mental illness or an entity in itself? One can argue that put a question to endlessly and rep nowhere. We’re left with a lot of unanswered questions, and perhaps this is what unsettles so many people who explore this movie. Some things don’t have any explanation, or at least an explanation we want to secure. Sometimes even the perpetrators are left at a loss. “Sylvia wanted something,” Gertrude Baniszewski said during her trial for which she was ultimately convicted of abolish and spent twenty years in jail before being paroled in 1985, “but I could never procure out what it was.” Perhaps Sylvia unprejudiced wanted to be treated like another human being.

Polka Palace Party introduces kids to four original genres of music. The songs in the four adventures are themed to Polka, Irish folk music, Gilbert & Sullivan and Rockabilly.

Unfortunately, the grouping in this DVD puts the two slower musical themes abet to wait on, and between “High Tea” with its Irish theme and “The Heart of the Jungle” based on the music of Gilbert & Sullivan, my son lost interest and barely glanced at “Viking Voyage”.

Not the best one to collect for a first pick, but composed worth a search for.

I bought this DVD because it had my all-time common episode, “High Tea” on it, which features Celtic music and a limited Irish dancing. Polka Palace Party is a very halt second, though. The creators of Backyardigans hold getting better by combining creative adventures for the 5 friends with terrific song and dance numbers. The clarity of the video is so distinct it’s almost 3-D.

Dave O’Brien leaps into battle against evildoers as the well-known radio adventurer Captain Midnight. Midnight seeks to protect a scientist and his daughter from invention-stealing dreadful guys out to crash America’s defense pains. The terrible guys, lead by Ivan Shark and his daughter Fury, stoop to recent lows as they battle the Captain and set to end our war inconvenience.

O’Brien fills the role of Midnight well, despite looking and sounding a bit like a young Richard Anderson (Oscar Goldman from “The Six Million Dollar Man”) .

Dorothy Short as the scientist’s daughter, Joyce Edwards, is mostly righteous as a sort of like interest for Midnight, but mostly useless in every other capacity. She brings the helpless-girl-who-gets-in-trouble-in-almost-every-chapter to heights never dreamed of by Noel Neill, who played Lois Lane in the classic Superman TV series. Short’s continual screaming and helpless antics stir the serial down a bit. Far better (and a better choice for the Joyce character!), is the despicable daughter of Ivan Shark, Fury, played by Luana Walters.

Joseph W. Girard plays the gruff but concerned Major Steele, who lets Cap sprint all over him (apparently, in Midnight’s army, being a “mystery man” means a captain outranks his commanding officer) . Guy Wilkerson and Sam Edwards lend a hand as Captain Midnight’s pals, who, like Captain Midnight and all the crooks, part the unusual inabillity to sustain their firearms when they earn their foes cornered.

Ivan Shark, played by James Craven, is a enormous villain. He is a master of disguise, and has a wonderful secret lair. Several things fail Craven however, as his personal “Arab” outfit to shroud his features is discarded about half-way through the account. Also dropped is the gang members going by numbers and not names. Worst of all, Shark’s purpose and motivation for trying to break America’s defense plants is never very clearly explained. As he sneers his rank map through confrontations with Midnight, all the while operating his dubious death traps, there never seems to be any connection with the Germans or Japanese, an element that would have added to the believability of Shark as an anti-American fifth-columnist villian.

One gets the sense that this serial (released in early 1942) had originally been more about a gang of rogue, criminal aviators who are after the scientist’s current bombsight to abet their maintain ends. That would beget sense, seeing as how the oft mentioned but never seen defense plant attacks were probably incorporated into the legend post-Pearl Harbor.

The serial is splendid kindly overall, with moderately suspenseful cliffhangers and some capable tricks, secret hideouts, and fights. It’s probably two or three chapter too long, though, and things can score a bit listless after a while. Probably Columbia’s best peril, but it’s no Republic serial, for clear.

CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT is a) a Columbia serial, and b) directed by James W. Horne. That’s two strikes on it good there, according to some serial purists who don’t care for Columbia’s illogical, six-against-one fight scenes and Horne’s exaggerated, tongue-in-cheek arrive. But this writer likes both Horne and Columbia, and this 15-chapter cliffhanger is about par for both.

Dave O’Brien, hero of Monogram East Side Kids melodramas, PRC Westerns, and M-G-M Pete Smith comedies, has to be the most authoritative serial hero on DVD. As Midnight he speaks very snappily! and urgently! and you Go when he tells you! O’Brien should have done more of these serials; he does his acquire stunts, too. James Craven, heavenly in Columbia serials as an easily indignant villain, plays a master of disguise here. The script has too many “ample impersonations” where Character A poses as Character B (you don’t capture these at all because it’s obviously the same actor twice) but at least it keeps the fable racy.

The cliffhangers are standard perils except for Chapter 10, which has a doozie: Craven traps Midnight in a sealed room, then he makes the floor revolve lickety-split, then he removes the walls, THEN he sets the floor on fire, and THEN he lowers a stone block on his victim! This jaw-dropping overkill looks like James Horne at work, and must have sent Saturday-matinee audiences into ecstasies.

The supporting cast is adequate. Sam Edwards is splendid as Midnight’s teenaged pal, Joseph Girard is wooden as O’Brien’s honorable officer, and ingenue Dorothy Short screams too worthy (but since she was Mrs. Dave O’Brien, we can understand the casting) .

Fun for serial fans, but not as enjoyably satirical as the Columbia/Horne “The Green Archer” and “Terry and the Pirates.” Print quality is fine throughout.
